  • Travels to Zierikzee and creates his first etchings

  • Takes a studio in Rotterdam and engages a model, Hillegonda Louise Mol
  • Resigns from the Dutch Iron Railway Company

  • First orders for etchings from London

1914      

  • Committee member of The Rotterdammers (De Rotterdammers)

1915      

  • First solo exhibition at Caramelli and Tessaro in Utrecht
  • Meets Bernard Canter, Piet Mondriaan, Theo van Doesburg
  • Joins the committee of The Rotterdammers and becomes a member of the Dutch Theosophical Society

1916

  • Marries Hillegonda Louise Mol on 15 June

1917      

  • Joins the art movement The Surf (De Branding) as a founding member
  • Spends time with members of the Bergen School

1918    

  • Hillegonda falls pregnant; the baby is stillborn
  • Exhibits with The Surf (De Branding) and with The Signal (Het Signaal)

  • Birth of daughter Laura on 26 January

  • Works in Brabant and creates the Tree landscape series in black ink (Expressionism) and abstract pastel

  • Leaves The Surf (De Branding) and joins the Rotterdamsche Freemason Lodge“Acacia”

  • Travels to Paris for The Exhibition of Decorative Art
